What No One Told Me About Being Pregnant With Twins
The beautiful, exciting, overwhelming, and sometimes downright weird parts of carrying two babies.
Twin pregnancy is beautiful. It is exciting. It is overwhelming. And sometimes it is just plain weird.
When I found out I was having twins, I thought I knew what to expect. A bigger belly, more doctor appointments, and probably some extra tiredness. What I did not expect was how completely different the whole experience would feel compared to what I had seen in regular pregnancies.
As a registered nurse I understood the medical side pretty well. But as a first-time twin mom, I quickly realized there was a whole other side that nobody had really prepared me for. This is the article I wish someone had given me the day I saw those two little heartbeats.

Every Twin Pregnancy Has Its Own Story
One of the first big lessons was to stop comparing my pregnancy to everyone else's. Twin pregnancy follows its own rules. More ultrasounds, more appointments, more monitoring, and way more comments from people about how big I was getting before I even hit the third trimester.
It is not because something is wrong. It is simply because you are growing two babies at once. That comes with its own timeline and its own challenges.
The Exhaustion Hit Harder Than I Expected
People warned me I would be tired. But they did not prepare me for the kind of tired that makes making breakfast feel like a full workout. Growing two babies means your body is working nonstop. Some days just getting through the morning was enough. And honestly, that had to be enough.
Around 28 Weeks My Body Said Slow Down
This was one of the biggest surprises for me. Around 28 weeks the pelvic pain got so intense that I had to stop working. Every step felt like my bones were going to give out. Rolling over in bed turned into a whole production. Even getting dressed took extra planning.
Not every twin mom deals with pain that severe, but it was a clear reminder that my body was carrying twice the load. Looking back I am really glad I listened to it and rested.
Nobody Warned Me About Lightning Butthole
I had heard jokes about lightning crotch during pregnancy. My body took it to another level. There were moments when a sharp, shocking pain would hit out of nowhere. It would stop me right in the middle of whatever I was doing. I would freeze, wait for it to pass, and then keep going like nothing happened.
As silly as the name sounds, those sudden nerve pains are pretty common when babies are growing and putting pressure on things. If the pain ever feels severe or worrying, always call your doctor right away.
There Were Way More Appointments Than I Imagined
Twin pregnancies come with extra scans, growth checks, and monitoring. At first it felt like a lot. Over time it became comforting. Each appointment was another chance to see both babies doing okay.
People Have Opinions About Everything
Suddenly everyone has advice or a story to share.
"You are going to be so tired."
"You've got your hands full."
"Are they natural?"
You do not have to engage with all of it. Smile, change the subject, or just nod and move on. You do not owe anyone explanations about your body or your family.
It Is Okay to Feel Excited and Scared at the Same Time
I wish more people talked about this part. You can be so grateful and so terrified all at once. You can already love your babies more than anything and still wonder if you are ready for what is coming. Those feelings can live together. It does not make you ungrateful. It makes you human.
Looking Back
If I could sit down with my pregnant self now, I would tell her this:
Slow down when you need to.
Accept help without guilt.
Trust your body.
Twin pregnancy asks a lot from you, but it is also getting you ready for the amazing adventure ahead.
You are stronger than you know.
